What is Assistive Technology (AT)?
Assistive Technology (AT) is any tool, device, software, or piece of equipment used to help students with disabilities increase, maintain, or improve their functional abilities. In short, AT helps break down learning barriers so students can fully participate in school, build independence, and succeed alongside their peers.
What Does Assistive Technology Include?
Assistive technology ranges from simple, low-tech items to advanced, high-tech tools:
Low-Tech Tools: Pencil grips, paper communication boards, highlighter tape, or graphic organizers.
High-Tech Tools & Software: Screen readers, text-to-speech programs, speech-generating communication devices, eye-gaze systems, or adaptive keyboards and switches.
Accessible Materials: Digital textbooks, audiobooks, and specialized learning materials.
How Does AT Help Students?
AT supports students who experience challenges with reading, writing, speaking, hearing, seeing, processing information, or physical mobility. By providing personalized tools, AT empowers students to express their ideas, access the curriculum, and engage in daily classroom activities.
How Is AT Chosen for a Student?
Selecting the right assistive technology is a collaborative process. A team—including parents/guardians, teachers, special education staff, and specialists (such as speech-language pathologists or occupational therapists)—works together to evaluate the student's unique strengths and needs to find the tools that fit best.
